Cleanup underway at flooded Boone County Courthouse

MADISON, W.Va. — The Boone County Commission is assessing damage following of the county courthouse’s basement back on Saturday when the courthouse’s boiler caused a water line break.

County Commissioner Al Halstead said they decided to close the courthouse in Madison Monday morning while they decide on a cleanup plan. He said some paperwork was damaged, but county records were not. Halstead said there was roughly two feet of water in the boiler room that varied from 2-4 inches in other office areas.

“We’re trying to relocate some of the offices that got extensive damage to the floors. This is mainly in the assessor’s office and the magistrate’s office,” said Halstead.

Halstead said maintenance crews worked to repair the boiler. Old carpet was disposed along with any unnecessary papers that were wet. He said there was minimal damage to office items and desks, but they are still getting estimates on cleanup work.

Saturday’s winter storm left the Mountain State soaked with rain, freezing rain, and wet snow. The water conditions were high in Boone County, especially in Fosterville and between Madison and Danville.
