Driver to be sentenced in hit and run that killed Charleston native

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — A driver who pleaded guilty to charges in a fatal pedestrian accident faces up to two decades in prison
at his sentencing in Monongalia County Circuit Court.

Alex Hambrick, 20, faces sentencing in February.

Alex Hambrick, 20, of Winfield, will appear before Judge Phillip Gaujot Tuesday afternoon.

In January 2016, Hambrick lost control of his truck running it onto Stewart Street sidewalk where the vehicle struck Charleston native Carli Sears.

On Dec. 19, 2016, Hambrick, a former WVU student from Winfield, admitted to DUI with death and leaving the scene of an accident with death, both felony charges.

Sears, 20, was visiting friends in Morgantown during the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday weekend when she was killed. The former George Washington High School graduate was enrolled at the University of Mississippi at the time of her death.
Hambrick, a 2015 Ripley High School graduate, told police he was drunk and didn’t remember what happened the night of the fatal crash.

He was a freshman at WVU at the time.
