‘Very active investigation’ in connection with murder of teenager in Hampshire County

AUGUSTA, W.Va. — A Hampshire County investigator says he’s confident an arrest will be made in the recent murder of a 14-year-old boy.

Jonathon Adams

Hampshire County Sheriff’s Department Chief Deputy Nathan Sions said Tuesday during an appearance on MetroNews “Talkline” the investigation into the death of Johnny Adams is very active.

“We’re confident that this was an isolated incident. We don’t believe there’s any further danger to our community. We’re confident that our investigation will help bring closure to the family,” Sion said.

Adams’ body was found in a shallow grave Saturday near Augusta following a search by representatives of more than a dozen agencies and community groups. He was first reported missing July 12.

Sions wouldn’t say Tuesday if the ongoing investigation includes a 16-year-old relative who was charged with burglary last week. Sions also said he couldn’t release the cause of death at this time.

Sions said when the search for Adams began they were hoping for a much better outcome.

“Our main focus, our main priority is finding this child. Obviously, we want them to be safe when we find them but unfortunately this situation didn’t turn out that way,” he said. “Now we have to go back and put the pieces together and investigate this for what it is.”

Adams came to Hampshire County from Connecticut in March to stay with family members during the COVID-19 pandemic.
