Brown says defense set the pace as Week 3 of camp opened Monday

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — The third week of WVU preseason training camp began Monday morning with a practice that head coach Neal Brown viewed as completely one-sided. Brown said that positive signs from the Mountaineer offense were difficult to find.

“It was as much of a dominant practice as I have been a part of in a long time,” Brown said. “I don’t think the offense won a single period. There were periods of practice where I don’t think the offense won a single play. I don’t know yet until I watch it whether it was really good defense, which I think we played better. Darius Stills, I am not sure we blocked him all day. I thought he was extremely active.

“There just wasn’t a whole lot of competing going on. We didn’t compete. In the passing game, receivers and quarterbacks were really non-existent all day.”

Brown highlighted the play of linebacker Josh Chandler-Semedo, cornerback Dreshun Miller, spear Tykee Smith, safety Sean Malone and defensive linemen Jeffrey Pooler and Darius Stills.

“Our guys on the back end really competed. I think they had multiple interceptions. A couple of them they just took away from the wide receivers. They had more fire. Our defensive backs had more fire than our receivers did. They competed harder and that’s probably a main reason they won the day.”

Preseason practice will continue Tuesday. The team will have a day off for the official start of classes on Wednesday.
