Monongalia education board wants answers about West Virginia Academy charter school

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — The Monongalia County Board of Education said Tuesday an application for a charter school is deficient.

Education leaders want responses from West Virginia Academy officials about concerns regarding the lack of trauma-informed education and counseling, as well as protections for racial minorities and the LGBTQ community.

The concerns were presented in letters received by education officials.

“We are awaiting their response to that notification and their corrective actions,” Monongalia County Schools Superintendent Eddie Campbell said.

The West Virginia Academy would serve students in Monongalia, Marion and Preston counties. School officials have until Friday at 4 p.m. to respond with corrective actions.

The Board of Education has scheduled a meeting for Nov. 30 on the institution. Nancy Walker, the president of the Monongalia County Board of Education, noted the body cannot consider the issue without Campbell, who serves as secretary to the board.
