Man stabbed Monday morning in downtown Morgantown

MORGANTOWN – Within minutes of a reported stabbing in downtown Morgantown Monday morning, police had a suspect in custody.

Officers were called to 1110 University Avenue in Morgantown around 7:20 a.m. where two men who had been staying at Bartlett House were involved in an altercation. The victim had been stabbed in the shoulder and back while the suspect fled on foot. A person matching the suspect’s description was spotted near the intersection of Beechurst Avenue and University Avenue and was taken into custody.

“We don’t know if this was an argument that took place in the Bartlett House. We’re still sorting out the details,” said Morgantown Interim-Police Chief Eric Powell.

The suspect, Alonzo M. Young, Jr., of New York, NY, has been charged with malicious wounding.

The victim, who name has not been released, was being treated for multiple stab wounds at Ruby Memorial Hospital.
