BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. — Authorities said the man and woman who died in a New Year’s Day murder-suicide in Bridgeport were Supervisory U.S. Probation Officer Vinnie Zummo and his wife, Kelly.

The couple was arguing outside their home in the Heritage Farms subdivision late Friday morning when Vinnie Zummo, 47, shot his wife and then went back into the couple’s home and killed himself, Bridgeport Police Chief John Walker said in a statement.

Kelly Zummo, 48, was found dead in a car that had crashed into a home on Oakview Drive. Walker said the original call came in that a vehicle was fleeing the area where the shooting was taking place.

Bill Powell, U.S. Attorney for West Virginia’s Northern District, released a statement Saturday afternoon in connection with the deaths.

“I, along with my staff at the U.S. Attorney’s Office, are shocked and saddened to hear of the tragic deaths of Supervisory U.S. Probation Officer Vinnie Zummo and his wife, Kelly. Our thoughts go out to their families, friends, and colleagues. As the investigation continues, please be respectful of those who knew the Zummos, as well as their families, at this difficult and unimaginable time,” Powell said.

Reports indicate Kelly Zummo was a longtime employee with Bridgeport-based Pratt & Whitney Engine Services.
