WVU students eligible for emergency grants related to pandemic

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Some West Virginia University students will be receiving emergency grants related to the coronavirus pandemic.

Federal lawmakers in December approved emergency funds for students who are enrolled at least part-time and have financial aid information on file with their respective institution.

“Anything related to their cost of attendance would be fair game for the students to use it on,” said Rob Alsop, WVU’s vice president of strategic initiatives. “That would include rent, meals or anything related to their cost while attending WVU.”

Recipients of the federal Pell Grant have top priority. Alsop noted these students will receive a $1,000 grant.

Students should fill out their student aid form by Feb.5 to be eligible for grants.

“If a student, for whatever reason, did not fill out their FASFA but would be eligible for this relief, we extended the time period to give them the ability to fill out a FASFA,” Alsop explained.

Officials will be working to provide students with information from the Department of Education. Alsop stated the institution hopes to begin providing grants within three weeks.
