WVU to open 2021 Big 12 football slate at Oklahoma

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — West Virginia’s 2021 football schedule is complete with the announcement of the Big 12 slate for next season.

The Mountaineers will open up league play on September 25 at Oklahoma. The Sooners won the Big 12 championship for the sixth consecutive season this past fall. WVU and OU did not play in 2020. Their originally scheduled game on Thanksgiving weekend was postponed due to COVID concerns on two separate occasions.

“The release of the 2021 football schedule is, hopefully, the first step to getting things back to a normal athletic season,” WVU Director of Athletics Shane Lyons said. “I know our players, coaches and fans want that and now we can start working toward that goal. We will have six home games and a road trip to Maryland that will be easily accessible for our fan base, and I believe there will be plenty of excitement surrounding our team as we head into the season.”

“This is a tough schedule, not only with the Big 12 Conference lineup, but also nonconference games against Power 5 teams Virginia Tech and Maryland,” WVU football coach Neal Brown said. “The schedule opens with six straight games before an open week on Oct. 16, and then we close the season with six more. Each half of the season is comprised of three home games and three road games. The schedule also gives our fans a chance to enjoy six home games and a short road trip to College Park for a game against the Terps.”

West Virginia’s first Big 12 home game is set for October 2 when the Mountaineers host Texas Tech. The Red Raiders have defeated WVU in back-to-back seasons. WVU’s next two games will be played in Texas. The Mountaineers will visit Baylor on October 9 and TCU on October 23.

There of WVU’s next four games will be at Milan Puskar Stadium. West Virginia will host Big 12 runner-up Iowa State on October 30 and then welcome Oklahoma State to Morgantown on November 6. After a visit to Manhattan to face Kansas State on November 13, the Mountaineers will host Texas on November 20 to conclude their home schedule. A trip to Kansas wraps the regular season on November 27.

Non-conference games for WVU were previously announced. The Mountaineers will open at Maryland on September 4 and will host Long Island on September 11 and Virginia Tech on September 18.
