BUCKHANNON, W.Va. — A high school junior in West Virginia has an opportunity to change their future with a full-ride college scholarship.
The 14th annual West Virginia Scholar Program began Monday, which is a program in part sponsored by MetroNews that carries a full-ride scholarship to West Virginia Wesleyan College in Upshur County.
Students have through April 30 to apply. The full ride to the Buckhannon institution is valued at approximately $160,000.
The scholarship will be awarded for four consecutive years and will terminate at the end of the fourth consecutive school year. The second prize is a four-year $5,000 scholarship and third prize is a four-year $2,500 scholarship.
West Virginia Wesleyan President Joel Thierstein said on Monday’s MetroNews ‘Talkline’ that his college is the real deal.
“You get very personalized attention here, very small class sizes, very good attention not only from faculty but staff. The mentoring comes from all levels,” Thierstein said.
Other sponsors include Friends of Coal, West Virginia Farm Bureau, West Virginia Hospital Association, ZMM Architects and Engineers, and Lou Wendell Marine Sales.
To apply, visit dev.wvmetronews.com or wvscholar.com. Applicants provide an essay, a transcript, and any test score information. Finalist details will be available on May 31.
