Larry Thompson named Parkersburg Catholic head football coach

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Former Mount View and Wyoming East head coach Larry Thompson has returned to West Virginia as the new leader of the Parkersburg Catholic football program.

“Parkersburg Catholic High School has worked hard to build a championship culture throughout our athletics program, and we are grateful to all who have been associated with this process for their hard work, devotion and dedication,” said PCHS Athletic Director Amanda Weatherwax. “We feel Coach Larry is the person best-suited to continue our football program’s mission of championship performance.”

Thompson played collegiately at Concord University and became the head coach at Mount View in 2014. In his final season in Welch in 2018, Thompson led the Golden Knights to the Class A semifinals with a 10-2 record. Thompson moved to Wyoming East a year later and led the Warriors to the Class AA playoffs with an 8-3 mark. It was East’s first playoff appearance in five seasons.

Last year, Thompson served as an assistant coach at University Lab High School in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Parkersburg Catholic did not field a football program in the fall of 2020 due to low numbers. Under Lance Binegar in 2018 and 2019, the Crusaders went 15-6. PCHS is scheduled to open the 2021 season at Clay-Battelle on August 27.
