West Virginia man injured in Maryland plane crash

CUMBERLAND, Maryland — A West Virginia man was injured in a plane crash Tuesday night in Cumberland, Maryland.

According to the Allegany County (MD) Sheriff’s Department, emergency crews were called to the Bierman Drive area for what residents first thought was a motorcycle crash.

Authorities learned that several children playing in the area heard someone yelling for help. The children and their parents located an injured man in the wood line prompting a call to emergency officials. It was later learned that Ronald Garrison, 76, of Great Cacapon, West Virginia, was flying an experimental aircraft when for unknown reasons the plane crashed.

Garrison was taken to UPMC Western MD for treatment. At that time units on the scene began to search the area for the aircraft. Approximately 35 minutes later the plane was located crashed in the tree line in the area of Canal Road.

Both the National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration are investigating.

Sheriff’s deputies were assisted in the search by MSP Aviation Trooper 5, Bowling Green VFD, District 16 VFD, and the Cumberland Civil Air Patrol.

Deputies were still on the scene Wednesday providing security.
