West Virginia, Ohio to play 3-game football series starting in 2025

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — West Virginia University and Ohio University have signed a deal to play a three-year football series starting in 2025.

WVU Director of Athletics Shane Lyons announced Wednesday the Mountaineers and Bobcats will play a 2-for-1 series starting September 6, 2025 in Athens, Ohio.

The Bobcats will come to Morgantown on September 18, 2027, and September 1, 2029 as part of the series.

The Mountaineers are 13-4 in 17 previous meetings with OU, the most of recent of which was a 20-3 West Virginia victory in 2001.

Ohio welcomes Syracuse to open the 2021 season, marking its first home game against a Power 5 opponent since Kansas came to Athens in 2017.

Members of the Mid-American Conference, the Bobcats are now under the guidance of Tim Albin, who replaced Frank Solich as head coach this offseason.

Solich previously coached at Nebraska before his arrival at Ohio. He became the MAC’s all-time winningest coach with 115 victories over 16 seasons at OU before stepping down to focus on his health.

Ohio joins Robert Morris and Pitt as the Mountaineers’ non-conference opponents in 2025, with the Bobcats the only road game of those three.

In 2027, WVU is slated to play at Alabama, while welcoming VMI and Ohio.

The Bobcats became West Virginia’s first non-conference opponent in 2029.
