Man accused in Morgantown murder in court Tuesday

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — A man charged in connection with a January murder in Monongalia County is scheduled to appear for a court hearing Tuesday.

Alexa Randolph

Indications are that Gary Smith, 60, of Morgantown, has reached a plea bargain agreement with prosecutors.

Smith is accused in the beating death of Alexa Randolph, 32, of Morgantown, back in January.

Randolph was reported missing on Jan. 28 when she failed to pick up her child. About 24-hours later she was found dead in the cargo area of her Ford Escape parked in the Hornbeck Road Walmart parking lot in Morgantown.

Smith, the paternal grandfather of Randolph’s son, was arrested and charged on Feb. 10. He’s being held without bail.

Jury selection in his trial was scheduled for Monday but a plea hearing has been set for 3:30 p.m. Tuesday before Monongalia County Circuit Judge Susan Tucker.

Investigators previously said Smith revealed things only someone who was at the crime scene would know.
