Storm rips roof of social services hub in Morgantown

MORGANTOWN – W.Va. – Officials are assessing the damage done by a powerful storm cell that ripped the roof off Hazel’s House of Hope in Morgantown.

Firefighters were called out Sunday around 9 p.m. and found most of the roof had been torn from the former Ramada Inn on Scott Avenue. Rain and water were pouring into the facility, prompting the evacuation of the 30 people who were staying there. A Monongalia County School Bus was brought to the county’s social services hub to transport the individuals.

Morgantown Code Enforcement has condemned the building, meaning no one can occupy the facility until safety hazards are repaired.

The National Weather Service is collecting data and damage assessments to determine what type of storm moved over the Morgantown area Sunday night.
