High water to start the day in Kanawha County

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The National Weather Services reported between 4 and 6 inches of rain fell on Kanawha and Putnam Counties in the course of just a few hours from Sunday night to Monday morning. The result has been a commute disrupted by high water across a number of roadways in the two counties.

Flooding was reported in Kanawha County from Sissonville to Kelly’s Creek.

“We’ve seen most of the high water in the places I’d call ‘the hollows’.” said Kanawha County Emergency Manger C.W. Sigman on the West Virginia Morning News.

Several homes were inundated with water in the early morning hours. Volunteer fire fighters evacuated a number of residents from their homes in boats as the water rose. The worst of the water in Kanawha County was in the eastern end of the county on Kelly’s Creek, Hughes Creek, Campbell’s Creek, and Cannelton Hollow.

Cedar Grove Fire Chief Gordie Coleman said he couldn’t remember water this high since the 1990’s in that part of the county.

The rainfall stopped by daybreak and waters began to recede, but there will be plenty of cleanup this morning.

Sigman also urged people to not drive across flooded roadways.
