Follow along: Kansas defeats West Virginia in overtime

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — West Virginia welcomes Kansas to a place the Jayhawks have never won — Mountaineer Field — on a dreary Saturday evening for each team’s opener in Big 12 Conference play.

Kansas is 0-6 all-time in Morgantown and has lost each of its five contests at this venue. The Mountaineers have won 18 straight home openers and need to prolong that streak to avoid an 0-2 start to head coach Neal Brown’s fourth season. The Jayhawks enter 1-0 after a 56-10 win over FCS foe Tennessee Tech.

9:40 p.m. — FINAL: KANSAS 55, West Virginia 42. Cobee Bryant intercepts Daniels on third down and returns it 86 yards to the end zone to seal the win for the Jayhawks. On the previous play, KU recovered what was originally ruled a Daniels fumble that was overturned to an incomplete pass. It matters not as the Jayhawks force a turnover on the next play. The Mountaineers fall to 0-2. Kansas improves to 2-0.

9:37 p.m. — SCORE: Quentin Skinner brings in a 4-yard touchdown pass from Daniels on third-and-goal and the Jayhawks are back in front. WVU needs 7 points on this possession to prolong the game. KANSAS 49, West Virginia 42, 1st Overtime

9:35 p.m. — Kansas gets a big break when Taijh Alston is flagged for roughing the passer after the Jayhawks lost 6 yards on a third-and-5 pass. KU faces first-and-goal at the WVU 10.

9:30 p.m. — West Virginia wins the overtime toss and elects to play defense. KU will start with the ball momentarily on the Mountaineers’ 25.

9:27 p.m. — The Mountaineers get a break and a well-executed kickoff that Kansas falls on at its own 11. The Jayhawks opt to take a knee and the game is heading to overtime. A steady rain throughout the second half has picked up even more.

9:25 p.m. — Daniels buys extra time and Ford-Wheaton improvises on his route as the duo connects on the two-point pass. KANSAS 42, WEST VIRGINIA 42, 0:35 4th qtr

9:22 p.m. — SCORE: Donaldson’s 1-yard touchdown run finishes off an 85-yard drive that would’ve ended early were it not for Kaden Prather’s 10-yard reception on fourth-and-5 from the WVU 20. The Mountaineers and Jayhawks each call a timeout before West Virginia, which trails 42-40, attempts a game-tying two-point play with 35 seconds left in regulation.

9:07 p.m. — West Virginia forces a three-and-out and Kansas punts on fourth-and-1 (a long 1). The Mountaineers will start at their 15 with 2:17 left, needing to go 85 yards for a touchdown and convert a two-point conversion to tie it.

8:56 p.m. — SCORE: Legg converts a 28-yard field goal and the Mountaineers trail by 8 after a disastrous sequence near the goal line. Daniels’ 8-yard run had WVU in position to go for a touchdown on fourth-and-goal from the 1, but a false start penalty on Treylan Davis moved them back 5 yards. A delay of game moved them back 5 more. KANSAS 42, West Virginia 34, 4:04 4th qtr

8:42 p.m. — SCORE: Hishaw finds plenty of room to run on third-and-5 and scores from 30 yards out to give the Jayhawks a two-possession lead. Kansas began on its 35 after the kickoff went out of bounds, and the Jayhawks wasted no time moving the ball as Daniels found Luke Grimm for 30 yards on the first play. KANSAS 42, West Virginia 31, 10:59 4th qtr

8:35 p.m. — SCORE: Casey Legg makes a 27-yard field goal after West Virginia stalls in the red zone. The Mountaineers remain without a second-half touchdown. KANSAS 35, West Virginia 31, 12:58 4th qtr

8:28 p.m. — The third quarter ends with West Virginia just outside the red zone. The Mountaineers will face second-and-9 from the Kansas 25 to start the fourth.

8:18 p.m. — SCORE: Neal reaches the end zone on a 2-yard run and the Jayhawks capitalize on Smith’s muffed punt for their first lead. One play before the touchdown, Hishaw recovered his own fumble on a 6-yard run. KANSAS 35, West Virginia 28, 4:00 3rd qtr

8:13 p.m. — The Mountaineers force a three-and-out, but Reese Smith muffs the punt and the Jayhawks’ Torry Locklin recovers. The first turnover of the game goes the way of the Jayhawks. Kansas starts at the WVU 24 with a steady rain falling.

8:08 p.m. — West Virginia punts for the first time tonight and Kansas takes over at its 27 with 8:36 to play in the third quarter. Points on this drive would give the Jayhawks their first lead of the game.

8:00 p.m. — SCORE: Kansas marches down the field on the opening series of the second half and pulls even on Daniel Hishaw’s 3-yard touchdown run. It’s the fourth straight series for the Jayhawks to end with a touchdown. KU is now 7-for-9 on third down. McCormick was in at corner for the Mountaineers after being forced to sit out the first half. KANSAS 28, WEST VIRGINIA 28, 11:32 3rd qtr

7:37 p.m. — West Virginia carries a 28-21 lead into halftime. The Mountaineers hold a 252-223 advantage in total yards and neither team has an answer for the opposing offense through two quarters.

7:30 p.m. — SCORE: Kansas scores a touchdown on a third straight possession, this one when Daniels throws to Neal for 17 yards on third-and-5. KU makes it a one-score game just before halftime and gets the ball to start the second half. The Jayhawks have 223 yards and are 5-for-7 on third down. WEST VIRGINIA 28, Kansas 21, 0:29 2nd qtr

7:18 p.m. — SCORE: Ford-Wheaton brings in a 5-yard touchdown pass on third-and-goal for his fourth receiving score in less than six full quarters this season. West Virginia has four touchdowns on four possessions and has moved the ball with little resistance from the Jayhawks. WEST VIRGINIA 28, Kansas 14, 3:11 2nd qtr

7:05 p.m. — SCORE: The Jayhawks score a touchdown on a second straight series, this one courtesy of Devin Neal’s 6-yard run on a direct snap to the tailback. KU has TDs on two of its three possessions. WEST VIRGINIA 21, Kansas 14, 8:26 2nd qtr

6:48 p.m. — SCORE: Any momentum garnered by the Jayhawks vanishes quickly when Daniels and Ford-Wheaton hook up for a 67-yard scoring strike on second-and-13. The bulk of the damage came after the catch. The Mountaineers have touchdowns on each of their first three possessions. WEST VIRGINIA 21, Kansas 7, 13:15 2nd qtr

6:42 p.m. — SCORE: The Jayhawks get a 10-yard TD pass from Daniels to Mason Fairchild on a well-designed play to start the second quarter. KU cuts its deficit in half. WEST VIRGINIA 14, Kansas 7, 14:57 2nd qtr

6:38 p.m. — The first quarter ends with West Virginia leading 14-0, but Kansas facing second-and-6 from the Mountaineers’ 10 when the contest resumes. The Jayhawks converted a fourth-and-2 from the WVU 32 when quarterback Jalon Daniels fit a 3-yard pass to Jared Casey into a narrow window.

6:27 p.m. — SCORE: CJ Donaldson scores his second career touchdown on a 1-yard run and the Mountaineers have had their way through the first 10 minutes. WVU’s second scoring drive featured a fourth-and-3 conversion from the Jayhawks’ 25, with Daniels finding a well-covered Bryce Ford-Wheaton on a 5-yard pass. Daniels has completed his first eight throws for 86 yards. WEST VIRGINIA 14, Kansas 0, 5:03 1st qtr

6:20 p.m. — WVU starts its second series from its own 40-yard line with Brandon Yates at right tackle in place of Hubbard.

6:15 p.m. — Malachi Ruffin and Rashad Ajayi get the start at cornerback for the Mountaineers.

6:05 p.m. — SCORE: JT Daniels finds Sam James all alone behind the Jayhawks’ defense for a 59-yard touchdown pass and the Mountaineers score on their fourth play from scrimmage. Daniels hit on all three of his throws to start. WEST VIRGINIA 7, Kansas 0, 13:19 1st qtr

6:02 p.m. –– Ja’Quay Hubbard starts at right tackle with Doug Nester at right guard. Jeremiah Aaron and Jaylen Anderson were back deep as a return men on the opening kickoff, which went for a touchback, after neither played last week.

5:55 p.m. — Kansas wins the toss and elects to defer. West Virginia will start with the ball for a second straight game.

5:15 p.m. — For the second time in as many games, West Virginia is not dressing defensive linemen Jalen Thornton, Hammond Russell or Zeiqui Lawton. Right guard Jordan White is available, though it remains to be seen how much White plays after leaving with an injury during the second half of last week’s 38-31 loss at Pitt.

5:00 p.m. — West Virginia will be without a key piece tonight as top cornerback Charles Woods is out against KU. Woods left last Thursday’s season opener at Pitt with what looked to be an ankle injury late in the first quarter. The preseason all-Big 12 selection did not return. During his Tuesday media session, Brown said he did not have an update on Woods. The loss of Woods could have extra significance with cornerback Wesley McCormick out for the opening half after being ejected for targeting during the fourth quarter at Pitt.
