Marshall fires baseball coach Jeff Waggoner

HUNTINGTON, W.Va – Marshall University has parted ways with longtime baseball coach Jeff Waggoner. The university athletic department announced late Thursday night that Waggoner had been relieved of his duties.

“We thank Coach Waggoner for his years of service,” said Christian Spears, Marshall’s Director of Athletics. “The future of Marshall baseball and the experience of our student-athletes, as well as the completion of our new baseball stadium, will continue to be our top priority.”

Marshall is moving forward with plans to construct a new baseball facility along Third Avenue, next door to softball’s Dot Hicks Field and across the street from Joan C. Edwards Stadium. Last month, Gov. Jim Justice presented Marshall with $13.8 million from the state to go toward the project.

Waggoner was hired in August 2006 and has coached more games than any other coach, 820. However, success was fleeting for Marshall baseball during his tenure. Waggoner compiled a record of 339-478-3. Marshall finished with a record of .500 or better just three times (2008, 2016, 2019).

The Herd’s best season under Waggoner came in 2008, when it made an improbable run in the Conference USA Tournament to the conference championship game, eventually losing to Houston 3-2.

Marshall will conduct a national search for its next baseball coach.
