Regular Season Closes for Nine Teams this Weekend!

Week #10…..where has the time gone?  This Friday night, of the 111 teams that play high school football in WV, 9 of them will bring their 2022 regular season to a close.  And, of those nine teams, four will also turn in their gear because making the playoffs is out of the question.

In all honesty, I am really surprised only 9 of the 111 teams will be closing the regular season this weekend!  I can remember when more than half the teams would play ten consecutive weeks and then have week eleven off to prepare for the playoffs.  But, I think more than anything, this just proves how tough it is to get a 10 game schedule……and, there are still a good number of teams that will play only 9 games this season.

Speaking of the 9 teams that will wrap up their regular season this weekend, we have two in Class AAA, four in Class AA and three in Class A.  In Class AAA, the Oak Hill Red Devils (5-4) will finish at home against (5-3) Beckley Woodrow Wilson.  Oak Hill is currently ranked #16 and a win over #15 Beckley would assure the Red Devils of a playoff berth.  A loss and they will be sweating it out next weekend.  The other team finishing up the regular season in Class AAA this weekend are the Vikings of Ripley.  The young men from Jackson County are currently (3-6) and they will host the Big Blacks of Point Pleasant (4-4).

In Class AA, four teams will wrap up the 2022 regular season this weekend including the (4-5) Bluefield Beavers as they welcome the Wolfpack of Ridgeview.  The young men from Clintwood, Virginia will come in to Mitchell Stadium with an impressive (8-0) record.  If the Beavers can upset the Wolfpack, Head Coach Fred Simon’s team would make the playoff field of 16, as they currently sit at #17!  Three other teams will finish the regular season this weekend including the undefeated (8-0) Patriots of Independence.  Head Coach John Lilly’s ballclub will travel to Wyoming County to battle the (2-6) Warriors of Wyoming East.  Independence is one of the teams in the state this year with only a 9 game schedule.  The Shady Spring Tigers of Head Coach Vince Culicerto will wrap up a disappointing campaign this Friday night as the gold and blue team from Raleigh County will host the (1-7) Raiders of Liberty Raleigh.  Shady Spring is (2-7) heading into this Friday night’s final game.  Also in Class AA, the Weir Red Riders will finish their regular season and with a win, they would wrap up a (7-3) campaign and look to be in the field of 16 when the playoffs begin on November 11th.

In Class A, three teams will wrap up the regular season this Friday night and only one of the three will move into the playoff round.  That team is Wheeling Central as the Maroon Knights look to finish with a win over (0-9) Berkley Springs.  Last Friday night, Wheeling Central dropped their first game of the season as they lost 49-35 on the road to Beaver Local of Ohio.  With the win, the Beavers moved to (8-2) on the season and the Maroon Knights dropped to (7-1).  Also wrapping up their season this Friday night will be the Red Devils of Ravenswood as the youngsters from Jackson County will close out with a trip to undefeated Roane County.  The Red Devils are currently (2-7), while Roane sits at (8-0)!  The other team in Class A that will wrap up the 2022 season this Friday night is Tolsia as the (0-8) Rebels will travel to Phelps, Ky to take on the (0-9) Hornets.

With this being week #10 in the season, this weekend has a bevy of great games to check out in all three classes.  In Class AAA, (6-2) Bridgeport will travel to (6-2) Musselman…..(7-1) Parkersburg South will host (6-2) Wheeling Park……(5-4) Oak Hill will host (5-3) Beckley Woodrow Wilson and it’s the annual MoHawk Bowl battle in Morgantown as the (5-3) Mohigans will host the (6-2) University Hawks at Pony Lewis Field.

In Class AA, (7-1) Frankfort will host (7-1) North Marion……(6-2) Nicholas County will try and bounce back from a 58-7 loss at Independence last week as they travel to Lindside to battle a very good and undefeated (8-0) Mavericks team at James Monroe.  Also in Class AA, the real big test for both teams finds undefeated (8-0) Scott on the road to Winfield to battle the (7-1) Generals.  Winfield’s only loss of the season came back in week #1 as they were defeated by Class AAA power Hurricane!

In Class A, two teams that both lost for the first time last week will square off in West Union as (7-1) Doddridge County will host (7-1) Williamstown.  Also in Class A this weekend, East Hardy (7-1) will travel to St. Marys to battle the (6-2) Blue Devils…….Montcalm (8-0) will try and stay undefeated as they travel to Hurley, Va. to take on the (4-4) Rebels……Petersburg (7-1) will entertain (8-0) Tucker County….and, (6-1) Clay County from Class AA will host the (5-3) Bobcats of Summers County!

Week #10 promises to be filled with a number of great games in all three classes so try and take in a high school game under those Friday Night lights!  And, after the game, join Dave Jecklin and me from 9:30 til Midnight for GAMENIGHT as we will have all the scores of all the games!!  Talk with you then!
