Weekend fire damages closed recycling business in Berkeley County

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — A weekend fire at the closed Entsorga waste-to-fuel plant in Martinsburg had at least six fire companies on the scene.

Baker Heights Volunteer Fire Department Chief Cory Roberts reported a heavy fire in the facility’s pit Saturday morning when they arrived.

As many as seven local fire companies responded to the blaze, which Roberts says caused ‘significant’ damage to the former waste-to-fuel plant, which closed down in April but still contained a large amount of garbage which had been collected to make fuel.

A post on the Baker Heights VFD Facebook page accompanied pictures and explained some internal temperatures rose above 900 degrees Fahrenheit.

Roberts told The Journal newspaper the garbage likely spontaneously combusted.

No injuries were reported during the five hours firefighters were on scene.

The waste-to-fuel facility closed in April.
