Jon Carpenter returns as Capital head coach

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — After a three-year absence, Jon Carpenter has returned to lead the Capital High School football program. Carpenter’s hiring was officially approved by the Kanawha County Board of Education on Monday evening.

Carpenter led the Cougars from 2010-2020. He posted a 91-35 record in 11 seasons. Capital completed an unbeaten run to the Class AAA title in 2014 with a 13-0 record. Carpenter’s teams advanced to postseason play nine times, compiling a 17-8 record in the playoffs. The Cougars also played in the Super Six in 2015 and they advanced to the semifinals four more times.

Carpenter replaces Mark Mason, who led the Cougars for the last three seasons.
